Intercom Systems
Having an intercom is an easy way to secure the primary entrance of a building. It allows for both visual and audio communication. Certain intercom systems also allow for communication between areas within the building.
Benefits of Having an Intercom System:
- Provides an extra layer of security for both people and property
- Allows for a streamlined process for couriers and deliveries
- Enables communication with those inside and outside the building as well as between the occupants themselves
- Ensures convenience for all involved

Intercom System Components
What is the difference between a PA system and an intercom? Public address (PA) systems allow someone to broadcast sound to an audience. Intercom systems do this too, and more. An intercom is a two-way communication system. It is well-suited for public addresses and private messages. Schools use them and so do stores like Walmart. They are found in garages, factories, apartments and offices. PA systems are more commonly found in concert halls and lecture rooms. Although both systems have security applications, two-way communication opens up more possibilities. Here are the components that make an intercom work:
The Base or Master Station
This is the central component from which all functions are controlled. As it is connected to all the other stations, it is also capable of broadcasting messages to all stations at once. All other parts, such as the mounts, are connected to this station.
The Substation
These are more commonly known as the speakers! They are not capable of starting the communication and do not have any buttons or microphones.
Intercom Stations
These are the parts that connect to the base or master station, including headsets, desk modules etc. These stations are able to engage in two way communication. Each station has a power source which connects it to the base station.
Things to Consider When Purchasing An Intercom System
Commercial buildings are often made of thick materials which can complicate a wireless connection. It is recommended to connect your intercom system directly to the Internet rather than to WiFi or a cellular signal. Smartphones are the more convenient way to use the system rather than wiring the system to each individual area or unit.
Having a video installed in your intercom system naturally deters anyone up to mischief! When someone approaches your building and they see themselves on the screen, they naturally think they are being recorded (which may or may not be the case). It also has the obvious benefit of those on the inside being able to see who is outside.
The cost of the intercom system is based on the following factors:
- The number of systems needed for the building
- Where it is located
- The wiring requirements
- The knowledge of the installer
There are a variety of options to choose from!
- Numerical door codes
- Using your smartphone to open the door
- Facial recognition technology
- Voice controls (integrated with apps like Siri or Alexa)
- Bluetooth
Contactless entry can be extremely convenient if you are not always able to be at your business. It allows you to provide entry remotely, anywhere in the world!
Touchless entry allows access without any doors or buttons having to be touched. Touchless intercom systems are almost always connected to automatic doors.
Intercom systems with cloud based management, have the lowest costs associated with them. It also ensures that updates are done regularly. Traditional intercoms may have a one time fee for equipment and installation but may also require more upkeep and maintenance.
The best choice is to choose an intercom system where the company also supports it should any issues arise! Design Smart Security Solutions has a wonderful reputation for providing the care and service that you need for any intercom system.
